Wouldn't you like to know....
#1 I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Winter sucks.
#2 I am a horrible liar. Seriously. Everyone can tell when I'm lying because I do a half smile and a giggle before telling you what I'm going to say. I've done it my entire life!
#3 I am a total introvert. <--- Read that if you don't believe me. Every. Single. One. of. Those. Describe me impeccably.
#4 I don't eat purple food. Eggplant, grapes (only eat green ones) cabbage, etc. Not because they are purple. It's just coincidental.
#5 My biggest fear is not being able to breathe. I have irrational fears of being smothered, drowning, being buried alive, etc.
#6 I love creative writing. I've written lots of short stories and poems, but I very rarely share things I've written. Blogging is different because I consider it a way to relax and get my thoughts out. It doesn't matter to me whether or not you read my blog, or whether or not you like it. It DOES matter to me if I let you read anything fictional I've written and if you like that or not.
#7 I am a very trusting person. I'm really not that guarded, and will tell just about anybody just about anything they want to know about me. However, when you do something to break that trust it takes me a while to forgive you. And it takes an incredibly long time to regain the trust you broke. I'm not heartless, everyone makes mistakes. But when someone purposely make the same mistake over and over I don't put up with it.
#8 I have a tendency to hold emotions in until I snap. Going back to #7....I can let things go. If you do something that annoys me I pretty much let it roll off my shoulders. If you make a snide comment here, or say something stupid there, it doesn't bother me too much and I won't say anything. Let's say you say something that irks me to no end: I can still keep my frustration pent up inside. But after dealing with the little things for months or years I get pretty fed up. You can make a face a certain way or say something I take the wrong way and I flip out. WHICH, is why my number one rule for my life is to never speak out of your emotions. I never make decisions when I am upset. I never speak out of anger. It's gotten me into trouble more times than I can count. More recently, I have done better with this but it's a struggle.
#9 When I was younger I truly thought I would run into Jesse McCartney and that we would get married. I also wished I lived with the Tanner family on Full House...I don't know why.
#10 I want to do mission work somewhere one day, foreign or in the united states, and work in an orphanage.
There's No Place Like Home
I love to travel! I love driving with the windows rolled down and the radio turned up, and laughing and talking with friends to pass the hours in the car. Gas station bathroom stops in the middle of nowhere with the family can provide adventures and excitement! Lunch stops are classics like McDonald's or Wendy's. But if I could live anywhere in the world, I don't know if I would move.
You see, home is where your loved ones are. I mentioned in my previous post that people are my passion. The people I love are my life. I don't think I could ever leave my friends and family here in my hometown. I also feel like there's a lot for me in Memphis. It's a diverse city with opportunities galore! I love my University, my job outlook after I graduate, my church, my current job as a substitute after school care teacher, and what I've done here. Sure, i could go live somewhere else for just a little while...maybe someplace sunny like Destin or Hawaii. But I will always come back home to Memphis.
A Beautiful Thing
I have an overwhelming passion for being around people. I love listening to people, talking to people, learning from people, teaching people, laughing with people, and creating memories with the people around me. I want to make a difference in the world. My philosophy is that if I can make even one person smile every single day, the world might be a better place. Life is better when we do it with others. I want to learn as much as I possibly can, and share as much as I know with people all over the earth. If I could do anything, and money were no option, I would travel for years visiting little bistros in Paris, libraries in London, museums in Greece, tribes in Africa, rain forests in South America, and little nooks and crannys all over the world. I wouldn't want to do the tourist-y stuff. I want to experience every part of other cultures, talk to strangers about their lives for hours on end, and learn as much as I can. I guess it's safe to say I have a passion for education too. I love children! They have this beautiful, wide-eyed, wondrous view of life that adds sparkle to their eyes and a warmth to my heart. I learn more from kids than I do anyone else. They remind me to love unconditionally, to trust, to smile and laugh, to play, to be vulnerable, and to be amazed by what's around me. I want to make a difference in someone else's life, so I know that one day soon I will be a teacher. It feels like a lifelong dream in a way. I can't picture myself doing anything else, and it's a beautiful things when a career and a passion come together.

5 ways to win my heart....
Blogging challenge Day One: Five Ways to Win my Heart (not in a particular order)
1. You can never go wrong with flowers. That's one of my favorite things in the world to get! If it comes with a handwritten note or poem it makes it that much better.
2. A desire to serve others.
3. Surprises. Not scaring me or jumping out and saying boo! Notes on my car, spontaneous plans, etc. Sweet surprises.
4. Being able to make me laugh!
5. Passion for your faith and things you believe in.

A Do Nothing Day
Well, this morning I overslept and didn't get to campus until 9:30. I definitely missed my history class that started at 9:05. So what's a girl to do? I grabbed a chicken biscuit and a coffee and came out to sit by the fountain.
I started thinking about my Thanksgiving weekend. My favorite parts of thanksgiving are family coming over, everyone sitting around watching football and parades, black friday shopping, and eating leftovers. All of which were done this year, so I would say it was pretty successful :) it was a great weekend!!!
I had a really hard time yesterday though. I love the holidays and this time of year, but being so busy all the time wears me out! So yesterday I went to church, grabbed lunch with some friends, and I went home and watched old movies until I went to sleep last night. It was a classic lazy afternoon and I desperately needed it. I curled under warm blankets in my pajamas, drank hot chocolate and watched Its a Wonderful Life (for the first time ever) How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Mars Attacks (which I didn't finish because it was stupid.) It was a do nothing day and I loved it!
So often during this time of year we go go and go as fast as we possibly can and forget to sit down and relax. So, take a deep breath and enjoy a do nothing day very soon!
Semester One in a Nutshell...
So far, I have not been the student who has gotten involved with twelve different clubs on campus in addition to Greek Life and attending all the football games. But I've made new friends, I've made all As and Bs, and I've gotten involved with just the right number of things to keep me from going stir crazy. I never thought I would say these words, but I love the University of Memphis. I love the pride, I love the diversity, I love the campus, and I love how I'm starting to find my place here. Sure, there are things I could do without: the commute from home to campus every day; some of the professors; and the math tutoring center. But overall, I love learning to be a Tiger. I honestly can't picture being anywhere else.
This semester I took five classes. I drove to school every single day, but they all started after 9 am so I really didn't mind too much. My favorite classes turned out to be my History class and my English class. My least favorite classes were Intro to Art and Foundations of Mathematics. (The other class was Academic Strategies. I really don't have any feelings-good or bad- towards that class.) I had the sweetest History professor! I always hated History in high school because it was never exciting, or taught by anyone who found it to be exciting. The professor I have now is cool because he absolutely LOVES his job! He gets equally excited about everything he covers in class. He loves talking to students, and he loves to teach. My English class was cool because I learned a lot about things that mattered. Technically, I think I actually took this class my Junior year, but I didn't pass the AP exam so I didn't get the credit. I wrote the same type of papers I wrote two years ago, but there was a reason behind each one. I wasn't just writing a rhetorical analysis, I was analyzing the nuclear development in North Korea or the Human Rights movements on the Korean Peninsula. When I edited other's papers I wasn't reading the summary of some article we were told to read. I was reading someone's opinions on the Syrian government or the issues with police brutality. I learned how to argue, I learned how to write, and I learned more about current events in the real world than I have ever learned before. The class I was in had an incredibly diverse group of people, and I learned how to listen and respect other's opinions and how to form and argue my own.
My math class was horrible. I'm really paranoid about negative things I say on the internet coming back to bite me in the butt later on in life so I'm not going into any other details other than I did not like it at all. I came close to dropping it, I came close to flunking it, I came close to getting up in the middle of a lecture more than once to scream or cry. My art class was just uninteresting. Nothing exciting there.
There you go! Melissa's first semester at Memphis! That was kind of boring, but there are some more exciting posts coming in the future.
I'm Not So New at This
